Keynote Speaker - Closing Session
Friday, April 12 |
Dan Ariens, great-grandson of company founder Henry Ariens, joined the company in 1983 and became President and CEO in 1998. Since that time, Dan's leadership has been defined by a set of five Core Values and 15 Management Principles that clearly
outline management expectations. His core values are simple and unwavering: Be Fair; Be Honest; Respect the Individual; Keep our Commitments; and Encourage Intellectual Curiosity.
A strong proponent of Lean manufacturing principles, Dan has created a culture of continuous improvement that has resulted in the creation of world-class manufacturing facilities by Lean standards. He was personally recognized in 2007 with the Eli
Whitney Productivity Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and is frequently tapped as a mentor by organizations promoting Lean leadership.
Over his tenure, he has led several strategic acquisitions, creating a family of brands that represent several of the most respected names in the consumer and commercial equipment markets as well as the replacement parts and accessories segment of the

WACTE Local 22
Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College |
In an effort to keep Hot Shots! new and fresh, a new Local will be highlighted each month. For a small fee, you will be able to share with all the Hot Shots! readers what makes your Local the best! Additionally, we want to know about your outstanding members! For this fee, you will be given an additional space to highlight a member of your Local.
If you would like your Local to be highlighted in an upcoming edition of Hot Shots!, please contact Kim Rebarchek at krebarchek@blackhawk.edu She will provide you all the necessary information to promote your Local.
Let's welcome Local 22:
Local 22 is in the midst of rebuilding, as many of our long time active WACTE members have recently retired. WITC's district also presents some difficulties, as it covers parts of 11 counties, with 4 comprehensive campuses and two learning centers. It can take 3 hours to travel from one campus to another! Communication can be a challenge and meetings where all employees are present are extremely rare. In response to our unique geography, each campus has a subset of active members who energize their Local group and a steering committee meets as much as possible to combine efforts and share information. We have some real standouts in Local 22: for example, one member, Cathy Pocernich in Ashland, recently sold 3 raffle tickets to every WACTE member she approached. When we hear of successes like these, we try to learn from these examples and achieve them at each campus.
This year, Local 22 is featuring two speakers at the Professional Development Conference. These young, dynamic, tech savvy people represent the new face of the College and hopefully of our Local chapter as well. This, along with the continued support of our President, Dr. Bob Meyer, helps support career and technical education and spread the word that WACTE is the organization of choice for advocacy, professional development, and networking.
WACTE Local 22 plans to see you at the Conference in April and hopes you have a great spring semester! |

Outstanding Member - Local 22
Let's Meet... |
|
WACTE Local 22 is proud to highlight one of our longest standing members - Mr. Larry Gee. You might recognize Larry as the emcee for the Annual Conference Awards ceremony. He has played many roles in the technical college system, and now has the important role of Senior Director of Teaching and Learning, directing our efforts in online education, assessment, and professional development. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Mr. Larry Gee:
What is your goal in education?
To improve student learning - one learning objective at a time.
What is the smartest advice you've ever received?
I remember our 12th grade HS English teacher lecturing to us one day, and it was the way she said it (of course, you had to be there), "If you have the ambition (she used gumption) to go out at night, you better have the ambition (gumption) to get up the next morning and show up at work." That statement has always been a good memory for me. I have probably received smarter advice at times, but this was a wise, respected, and experienced instructor.
What are your go-to stress relievers?
Kayaking. Music: Benedictine Monk's "Chant", Chris Botti's "When I Fall in Love", or simple pan flute music.
I instantly feel better when...
- I am visiting family back home. I still get that same little child feeling (50+ years later!) of being safe & secure, and letting the world pass by. It takes me two days upon return to "switch back."
- I have completed a project.
- I am waterskiing.
My pet peeve is....
when people play the "entitlement" card.
My hidden talent is....
I wish I HAD talent - let alone "hidden"! lol. Friends would not label this a talent, but I like being unexpectedly creative in everyday conversations when the opportunity arises. For example, if someone is trying to think of a name, I will just make up some names.
If I were a superhero, my power would be....
I don't know how to best convey this, but, to improve the life of disadvantaged students to the point where they think nothing of sitting in the front row of class, not being afraid to answer questions, and having them not afraid to be social with the rest of the class. Walking into a classroom say, with two students, I will always pick the disadvantaged student with whom to have the extended conversation. I want them to feel they are part of the class just like all the others.
What is one food that you will NEVER give up?
Cookies. Any kind.
What is your favorite memory from working as a Dean?
This was a combination Dean/Instructor position at the time: Being the Business Professionals of America (BPA) advisor at the same time and driving with 9 students to the national BPA conference in Dallas, TX. We still have reunions to this day.
What is your favorite WACTE/ACTE memory?
Being selected as the WACTE Educator of the Year. What a great honor.
Why is membership in WACTE so important to you?
Membership fees are used to market technical education plus the important factor for me is that WACTE/ACTE is active in many political "behind the scenes" support areas for technical education that people like me don't have access. WACTE is the lifeline of all technical educators. |
